My new threads

Tonight is quilt guild.

I think I will wear my new handkerchief blouse. Thanks to my friend Mara, I ended up with enough for my all purple top. Here is my  hankie shirt that I made two years ago.

My next one just might be out of Christmas hankies!

 Front view

Back view. It makes me wonder if the top two hankies didn't come in the same pack?

For quilt guild tonight it's a pot holder exchange. Bring 2 get 2! It's also picnic night.

Here are my two potholders.

Stay tuned for what I bring home!

Our trip to Hamilton Missouri

The trip started out Thursday with someone not too happy that we were leaving. Sorry Bentley you can't go this time. Probably not next time either.

We would be attending the Hamilton Seam Engine show with our good friends Margie and Phil.

Margie was a great host. She took me to Missouri Star Quilt Company. If you are a quilter and you don't know about this place, you should!  Their daily deals are so cool, and they are always available for $5 shipping.

I even found Judy Laquidara's book.  See Judy I took a picture just for you.

We then got a personal tour of their warehouse a block away from the store, thanks to Margie's classmate.

I found this funny, all through the fair grounds were pink port a potties.  The doors were labeled "women only". Would you believe it didn't always stop the men???

Later in the evening we watch the horse pull.  The horses were beautiful!

Phil makes two antique freezers full of homemade vanilla ice cream! One freezer was dated 1923, the others was a present for his parents on their wedding day.

Here's the Saturday blacksmiths enjoying Phil's homemade ice cream along with my fresh canned peaches!

Margie and I pose for a quick pic.

Margie took me antiquing where I found this canvas bag. My Dad worked for the Missouri Highway Department when I was a kid. These were always coming home with sand in them.

I found this at the flea market. It's a moth ball container. It still has the original F.W. Woolworth sticker on it!
I even helped Phil by being his striker!

We had an awesome time with our friends, Margie and Phil, exchanged many stories, shared our food, and enjoyed their great town.

Forgive me Aunt Mary for I have sinned.

The blacksmith's Aunt Mary's recipes have long been guarded.  For years we admired her tomato soup. At the family reunion fund raising auctions, someone from the Iowa clan usually brought several jars to be auctioned off. The recipe never was to be found.

However, two years ago, her family made a cookbook in her memory. The books didn't come easily. You had to win one by being the highest bidder at the auction.

Some how we were successful.

Last night we looked up the recipe in the book and proceeded to make it.

It would take 15 pounds of tomatoes, celery, onions and a red sweet pepper. You cook that until tender and then run it through a ricer. This is where the first of our variations began. We ran our tomatoes through the food mill first, which removed the seeds and peel.

While the tomatoes were cooking with the diced celery and onions we washed the food mill, thinking we would use it again to squeeze out the onions and celery. As the vegetables became tender and smaller we decided why dirty the mill again?  So we opted for chewy tomato soup.  When it was all tender, I mixed up the flour, salt, butter and sugar using a pastry cutter. Then this is slowly stirred in to avoid any lumps. After bringing to a boil, I let it simmer for about 5 minutes before filling my jars.

The blacksmith then pressure cooked the quarts for 25 minutes.

So forgive us Aunt Mary for changing your recipe. But we are pretty sure it will taste the same!

Rest in Peace, Mary Monat - 1926-2009

All in a day's work!

On Friday I bought a 3/4 bushel of North Carolina peaches at the Amish store.

Today, I made one pie, canned 7 pints of sliced peaches  and 11 pints of peach salsa, gave 10 peaches to my bff, prepared a big bowl of slices, and I still have 7 left to eat!

Never mind the fact, I did dishes 3 times, fixed lunch, washed, dried, and put away 2 loads of laundry, and took care of a 3 year old.

I was in the middle of making dinner when this happened.

Period.

End of my work day!

Dang new mandolin slicer. (I know Sarah. You told me so!)

Drought 2012 in Mid-Mo

Wild life has been abundant in our yard lately. The birds are thirsty. The deer are hungry. Yesterday there were these 7 eating from our feeder. One day we saw 1, next day 3, now it's a herd.

Last night, something killed this dog.

It killed part of one plant too.

The entire bed was dug up almost all the way around. Our guess is an armadillo. (No actual dog was harmed in the previous photos.)

It's so dry here. Look at my tree in the front yard. Look at the dead grass too.

The pampas grass is usually 5-6 feet tall with 10 foot plumes. I doubt this is even 36 inches tall.

My three year old lilac bush from Tammy at Flat Creek Farms. I doubt it will come back.

The only green showing in front is along the sidewalk.

The blacksmith has worked hard at keeping the tomatoes alive. Some days it seems they are just alive, not much on producing. Same way with the pepper plants, they are alive, but not producing.

I was so excited that I finally got a start of the old fashioned sweet peas, and then this happened.

We gave up on the back garden. It took three days of gathering a hand full of green beans to make one serving for the two of us.

I was watering these every night, and do you think they appreciated it? I finally quit about 5 days ago.

This was a bleeding heart given to me by my co-worker. I'm hoping it just went dormant for the season.

My maiden hair grass, surprise lilies, day lilies and pink cone flowers . . . done for.  Even the goose looks dead.

I'm pretty sure, from my house to your house, it's all brown . . .

My friends are in my new book!!

My friend Tammy at Flat Creek Farm talked about a new Barn quilt book a few weeks ago. Here's her story!

As soon as I read her post, I went and ordered the book. I even got a personally signed first edition by Suzi.

I don't make much time to read. So week before last, when we took the camper out for a few days the book went along with me.

About 8 o'clock one night I was reading the book. I came to page 53 and I saw another friends name, Jeri Landers of Hopalong Hollow Gazette. If that name sounds familiar, it's because I have a couple of her prints. Here's my story.

Dang, had I known that when I ordered, I would have had Suzi include it on the inscription!

Back to my book to see how many more of my friends are in the book!

P. S. If you are interested in ordering the book, Tammy has a link on her blog. Suzi Parron, the author, can also be found on facebook under Barn Quilts and the American Quilt trail.

Osage Bend Picnic 2012 and QUILTS

Sunday we watched the 3 grands while their parents worked at their church picnic. After nap time we went to have dinner with them and enjoy the festivities.

The meal is the best, fried chicken, roast beef, real mashed potatoes (the son helped peel them), green beans, yummy cucumber salad, cole slaw, applesauce, and pick your own dessert, all served family style.   Can you tell what Ms Lizzie picked?  She really enjoyed the icing on her cupcake.

It was then onto the games. Alex tried his hand a bean bag toss.

Lizzie some how wormed her way into buying a Popsicle.

The grounds weren't too crowded until about 4 in the afternoon.

We even went fishing.

Here the son and family are  enjoying a beautiful day in the country. Notice the yellow bag?  If was full of the goodies the kids won. Brady won a Missouri University T-shirt. It might fit him by the time he goes to college too.

I took pictures of the quilts that were auctioned off. Sorry it's hard to get good pictures under a small tent.

Life is good!
