Osage Bend Picnic 2012 and QUILTS

Sunday we watched the 3 grands while their parents worked at their church picnic. After nap time we went to have dinner with them and enjoy the festivities.

The meal is the best, fried chicken, roast beef, real mashed potatoes (the son helped peel them), green beans, yummy cucumber salad, cole slaw, applesauce, and pick your own dessert, all served family style.   Can you tell what Ms Lizzie picked?  She really enjoyed the icing on her cupcake.

It was then onto the games. Alex tried his hand a bean bag toss.

Lizzie some how wormed her way into buying a Popsicle.

The grounds weren't too crowded until about 4 in the afternoon.

We even went fishing.

Here the son and family are  enjoying a beautiful day in the country. Notice the yellow bag?  If was full of the goodies the kids won. Brady won a Missouri University T-shirt. It might fit him by the time he goes to college too.

I took pictures of the quilts that were auctioned off. Sorry it's hard to get good pictures under a small tent.

Life is good!

Osage Bend Picnic, Quilts 2011

Sunday August 7th was St Margaret's Picnic. As usual the food was delicious, golden fried chicken, pot roast smothered in gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, the best cole slaw and even fresh sliced homegrown tomatoes. I particularly liked the bowl of fried chicken livers that were placed on the table in front of me, not to mention the raisin pie I picked from the dessert table.

After stuffing myself I went outside to see the quilts. Forgive me ladies, if I got the names mixed up.

This one was adorable. It measured 41 by 58

Traditional Log Cabin

If I would have bid on one, this would be it.
 I loved it.
I even found some selvages used in the blocks.
 It measured 101 by 111.
Broken Star

The heat was drippy.
So much humidity.
We left before the auction started.
I hear the 28 quilts bought in about $10,000 for the parish.

This grand child was more interested in the refreshments instead of looking at quilts.

About an hour after this the heavens opened up, the winds blew storm storms in with lots of rain. Thankfully the quilts were unharmed!

Another beautiful day in the country!

Osage Bend Picnic

It was another beautiful day in the country. Jeremy and Lori's church had their annual picnic. The grounds were crowded with people visiting and quite a few politicians mixed in.

The meal, served family style, consisted of golden fried chicken, pot roast, real mashed potatoes, green beans, the best slaw, cucumber salad, fresh sliced tomatoes, and your choice of desserts.

Elizabeth loved her mashed potatoes.

Here is the first quilt up for auction. It brought $500.00.
The second one went for $450.
The third also went for $450.

After that I forgot the numbers.

This one was was bought by our friends, Pam and Loren. It has the cutest ruffle all the way around it.

Cardinal birds were all over this one.

Someone's 4-H ham was purchased at the fair this week. The banker who bought it donated it to the church auction. It brought $90, that buyer then donated it back again. The next person bought it for $70 and kept it to eat. He's going to have some fine country cured ham for breakfast tomorrow!

One of the best things at the picnic??? The pie I got with my meal was raisin!!! Yummy in my tummy! My mother-in-law used to make the best raisin pie for me and my late father-in-law. We were about the only two in the family that ate it. How I miss him and that raisin pie!

The Weekend ended great!

The weekend started out great. We headed up river after work to grill dinner on the island.

Colten got into eating cherries.

Our boat ride included seeing this! Wow that's not a cow! Where did he come from on the Osage River?

Saturday evening after church we brought the three grand kids home with us, while their Mommy and Daddy went for a date night.
Here is Mr A. the movie that started at 8 was just too late for him.
Oh and notice his eye? That's what happenes when you get too close to the spin table that holds the grocery bags at Wal-Mart. Yikes! (It did get him and his brother free suckers from Wal-Mart.)

Sunday morning, I canned tomatoes and chili sauce. Bum arm and all (Thanks for the call Tammy regarding my arm). The arm can't be hurt too bad, they don't have me going to an orthopod until the middle of the month.

Sunday we went to Osage Bend Parish. Shown here are some of the parishioners from their centennial a year or so ago. It was all you could eat fried chicken, and roast beef.
After dinner we played bingo with the boys. Alex won $19.25. The boys also played lots of kids games and went home with what they called good loot, including new hats.
The evening ended when I was told I won $50 cash in their raffle.
It's going to be a good week!

Osage Bend Fish fry

It is an annual event the first Friday of Lent, for the St. Margaret Parish of Osage Bend to hold their fish fry. Tonight was no exception. We arrived promptly at 5:00. The hall was already half full. The line wound half way through the hall. We waited in line maybe 20 minutes.

The menu included FISH, slaw, french fries. baked potatoes, hush
puppies, baked beans, bread and butter. It was all you could eat.

After our meal we went out to the fry shack. There our son and most of the men of the parish were working. Oh this is a men's club event. I forgot to tell you that.

Life in the country is good.

33 degrees and 1 to 3 inches of snow by morning is coming. Or so they say!
